Food Additives

It may not surprise you that substances are added to processed food...

..but the number and potential toxicity of those additives in any item on the supermarket shelf may come as a shock.

Stabilisers, thickeners, flow agents, taste enhancers, artificial flavors, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners are just a very few of the full gamut of things added to foods you may buy daily..

The effects of additives on children are documented in an article in the Daily Mail Online's Health Section, entitled "The proof food additives ARE as bad as we feared". A study funded by the UK government's Food Standards Agency(FSA) is understood to have drawn a link with temper tantrums and poor concentration in children.

It was also found that the color additives in foods were doing as much damage to children's brains as lead in gasoline. Click Here for the report. Further comments on an inadequate response from the FSA Here

MSG, used as a 'taste-enhancer' in nearly every form of processed food on the market today, is diabolically dangerous, and often disguised by such ambiguous terms as 'spice', 'natural flavors' or 'hydrolyzed vegetable protein.' Be very much aware of what this can do to you - see the reviews of the book Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills. Written by a neurosurgeon, this book shows very clearly what are the effects on the human brain of MSG and other taste-enhancers.

To be fully aware of what chemicals you and your family are ingesting, you need to start reading labels. And to read labels with any understanding of what's in front of you, you need to know the language.

Pre-packaged food has many hidden nasties. It may also contain items that for one reason or another you need to avoid. To know what you are eating, you need to become label-wise.

I want to quote you a couple of editorial reviews. These 2 books are the best out there on the market for helping you decipher the true meaning of what the manufacturers put in tiny print on their labels:
The Label Reader' s Pocket Dictionary of Food Additives
"Do You Know What You' re Eating? Odds are you're eating generous portions of maltodextrin, carrageenan, benzoic acid, and aspartame every day-- not to mention scores of other additives that may not be good for you.

The Label Reader' s Pocket Dictionary of Food Additives is the most up-to-date quick reference guide to more than 250 of today' s common food additives-- found in just about everything we eat. It has the latest findings in an easy-to-read dictionary format with all the information you need to make intelligent food choices. Each additive is clearly rated with a symbol signifying that it is: safe, questionable, or a probable health hazard. "
